Transport for Greater Manchester Issues Travel Advisory Ahead of Christmas Markets and M67 Closure

As Manchester gears up for the festive season with the launch of its popular Christmas Markets on Friday, November 8, Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM) has issued a travel advisory urging the public to plan ahead.

With an influx of visitors expected, car journeys in and around Manchester and Salford’s inner ring roads could take up to 20% longer during peak hours, especially between 4pm and 7pm.

TfGM encourages residents and visitors to opt for public transport to ease congestion and avoid delays. The city’s extensive Metrolink network, along with 24-hour bus services like the V1 and 36, which connect Manchester to Leigh and Bolton, offer reliable options for traveling to festive events without the stress of parking.

M67 Closure Notice

For drivers, a major closure of the M67 in Tameside is scheduled from 9pm on Friday to 5am on Monday, affecting the stretch between J1A and J3 due to essential bridge work. TfGM advises drivers to use official diversions and avoid relying solely on sat nav guidance. Local residents in areas like Denton, Hyde, and Stalybridge are encouraged to consider alternative routes, public transport, or adjust their travel times, as increased traffic is expected on diversion routes.

Additional Weekend Events Impacting Travel

In addition to the Christmas Markets, Manchester will host a Remembrance Sunday ceremony at St Peter’s Square, leading to tram service interruptions and road closures between 10am and 12:30pm. Sunday will also see Manchester United’s game against Leicester City at Old Trafford and the MTV EMAs at Co-op Live in the evening, both of which are expected to draw large crowds.

Danny Vaughan, Chief Network Officer at TfGM, highlighted the benefits of the Bee Network, urging travelers to leave cars at home for a smoother, cost-effective journey. “Choosing public transport is a smart way to save time and money during the festive season,” Vaughan said. “With frequent bus and tram services, affordable family tickets, and options for walking or cycling short distances, people can avoid traffic and enjoy a stress-free journey.”
